I wiped out earlier this week, where some slush was. Hurt my head
quite good. Even had a headache for the rest of the day (is that a
concussion?). While I'm sure a helmet would have helped I wanted to
point out many people who wear helmets in this situation would have
claimed "It saved my life" or "I would have had a serious head injury
had I NOT worn my helmet" which is of course, nonsense.
This is how a distortion of the truth happens.
The truth of the matter is, in most cases it would have saved them from
superficial injury.

I fell a few times on last year's hard frozen slop and never hit my
head. I've shorts with foam hip padding that proved more useful than
head gear.
