Dear Bicycling Organizations:
Please find attached the Vancouver Police Department's News Release
regarding the VPD Helmet Education and Enforcement Program.
The Vancouver Police Department's goal is to increase helmet use
amongst cyclists in an effort to decrease the risk of injury.
The Vancouver Police Department will start a targeted bicycle helmet
enforcement initiative on June 15th which will run until June 30th,
2005. Regular enforcement will continue throughout the rest of the
year. Fines will be issued to offenders to encourage compliance with
the rules. Police will also be ensuring cyclist are complying with
other regulations such as having required lights at night.
Motor vehicles which fail to yield to bicycles will also be issued
violation tickets.
The Vancouver Police Department wishes to encourage responsible
cycling as well as encouraging drivers to respect cyclist's rights on
the roadway.
As part of the Vancouver Police Department's emphasis on education, I
would like to encourage all the organizations to feel free to
disseminate the attached News Release to their distribution lists.
