i had a hayes cable disc brake installed on my back wheel last year and
all has been well. a couple of rides ago it started to squeak a bit.
last week i cleaned the bike with my usual green degreaser/cleaner and
changed the disc brake pads. everything seems to work fine except they
won't fully lock. the disc slides thru the pads. should i not have used
the degreaser?
any ideas would be grand!
cheers

(ps: my LBS installed the pads and suggested i need to break them in.
don't remember doing this the first time.)

I don't know anything about disc brakes so I can't
offer any personal expertise. But if you do a
Google search on:
hayes cable disc brake squeak
you'll get a bunch of info.

cheers, & good luck,
Tom

I don't know how good the info will be, because as I say,
I don't know anything about disc brakes. But when I
Googled on those keywords, it looked to me like noise
is a fairly common problem with those brakes, so I'm
hoping someone will have described the fix somewhere
on the WWW or Usenet.

Come to think of it, you might get some answers if you
post your question to the newsgroup: rec.bicycles.tech

the advise i found was to clean them really well. my next door neighbour
is a heavy duty mechanic and had some powerful disc brake cleaner stuff.
i tried it and it seemed to help. he then suggested i go for a ride down
a hill and 'burn' the disc a bit. i did and they seem to be back to
normal again!

thanks, tom, for taking the time to respond.
cheers
